• N'ever is a deliquent and (former) petty criminal who, through serendipitous circumstances, was scouted by the Scions of the Seventh Dawn and thrust into the role of Warrior of Light. She's cantankerous and standoffish, with a disdain for authority and politics.

• Y'shtola is an accomplished Sharlayan scholar and mage with a deep sense of curiosity and a penchant for being reckless in pursuit of knowledge. She takes her duties as a Scion seriously, though she is often brutally honest - sometimes bordering on cruel - with ally and associate alike.

N'ever met Y'shtola early in her adventuring career - both tracking the same kidnappers in Middle La Noscea and eventually having their investigations cross. Even though she, herself, was a criminal masquerading as an adventurer at the time, N'ever was instantly suspicious of Y'shtola. It was only when Y'shtola leapt to their mutual defense against a rampaging goobbue that N'ever's mind was changed.

After the dust had settled, they barely had a chance to exchange words before Y'shtola took her leave. Still, they had left an impression on each other. N'ever was dazed by Y'shtola's enigmatic personality and the sense that the other woman knew more than she was letting on. Y'shtola felt intrigued by the strange way N'ever carried herself for a supposedly do-good adventurer.

• Throughout her life, N'ever has had her fill of people who would treat her as scum of the earth OR put her on a pedestal. More than anything, she wants to be understood not through the lens of expectation, but as simply herself. Y'shtola, in her shrewdness, does just this.

• In turn, N'ever is good at seeing through Y'shtola's facades to the real her - past the veneer of "gifted scholar" or "competent liaison" to a woman who can be cruel, foolhardy, guarded, and deeply motivated by justice. It's the entirety of her that N'ever loves.

• Y'shtola is used to being treated as the smartest person in the room. Sometimes, she even buys into it herself. N'ever doesn't. And when Y'shtola is ready to act reckless because she's forgotten that she, too, is fallible, it's N'ever who reminds her to keep her feet on solid ground.

• In turn, Y'shtola enjoys trying to pull back the layers of who N'ever is, convinced of N'ever's capacity for good. She's the first to acknowledge N'ever's flaws and yet that only makes her want to coax something more out of her. Y'shtola can see N'ever's empathetic heart for what it is, sometimes even better than N'ever can.

• ✦ Y'shtola -- Y'shtola finally understood her feelings some time after reuniting with N'ever on the First. Three years apart had "lowered her guard" so to speak, and when N'ever suddenly appeard in Rak'tika, the strength of her own emotions had surprised Y'shtola.

• Later, when night returned to the forest, Y'shtola remembered a promise they'd made to each other the eve of their battle with Titan, and was quietly grateful for the chance to have more nights together.

• ✦ N'ever -- For N'ever, the moment came in the depths of the Tempest, after fighting Elidibus. Having relived so many memories during his test, spoken with Hyth's shade and heard the echoes of long dead Convocation members... something finally clicked upon seeing Y'shtola again.

• As she and Y'shtola walked together through the quiet city streets of Amaurot, she realized she felt at home with her. She felt most like herself with her.
